During the Edo period, painters who should be called geniuses were active all over the country, breaking through conventional wisdom and taking on the challenge of innovative and unique expressions.
Not only painters with radical and strong personalities, such as Ito Jakuchu, Nagasawa Rosetsu, Soga Shohaku, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who have been attracting attention recently, but also Tawaraya Sotatsu, who has been talked about as the “mainstream” in the history of Edo painting, and others. Korin Ogata and Okyo Maruyama are also continuing to challenge new expressions.
In this exhibition catalog, 35 genius painters from all over Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Nagasaki in the south, will introduce their unique works.
